Developing a Business Case to Measure Top Environmental Impacts at Major Online Retailer
The Company does not have internal consensus or strategies concerning our most prominent environmental sustainability impacts or opportunities. There may be existing ad hoc initiatives (for example, we know that some alternative packaging is in use) but no comprehensive strategies, nor detailed metrics or reporting, exist specifically to focus on most material impacts.
GOAL STATE
The Company will have internal awareness of its top environmental impacts. The company will be equipped with metrics and reporting strategies to measure these impacts and will be able able to actively pursue more widespread management, goal-setting, etc.
- Establish an understanding of the scope and importance of packaging materials and carbon for the Company
- Why are these material issues for the company?
- What are the direct and indirect impacts of these topics? Which should be prioritized?
- In what way are these topics important to the company’s stakeholder groups?
- Determine which metrics the Company should use to measure their packaging and carbon impact
- What are the best metrics and associated unit of measurements for the Company to track and manage these impacts?
- Which KPIs are best practice for the industry?
- Outline the business-case for measuring these environmental metrics and KPIs
- What is the value of tracking these measurements?
- How do other peers or industry stakeholders utilize these metrics?
- How could these metrics be utilized internally? (i.e. in operational/daily-decision making, realizing efficiencies, etc.)
