About Us

Our Mission
Our mission is to get more materials in the recycling bin by taking the guesswork out of recycling.

Our Goals

  • Reduce confusion by creating a clear, well-understood, and nationally harmonized label that enables companies to convey to consumers how to recycle a package.
  • Improve the reliability, completeness, and transparency of recyclability claims.
  • Provide a labeling system that follows Federal Trade Commission Green Guides.
  • Increase the availability and quality of recycled material.
History
How2Recycle began in 2008 as a project of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. The How2Recycle Label program finished its soft launch in early 2012.

In 2016, How2Recycle released its first consumer education video on Mother Nature Network.

In 2017, How2Recycle was awarded a DuPont Packaging Silver Award for innovations in packaging innovation.

Our Method
Each How2Recycle label is based on the best availability of recycling data available, as well as critical technical insights from Association of Plastic Recyclers, Recycled Paperboard Alliance, and other insightful industry experts. We're the only recycling label system designed to comply with the Federal Trade Commission's Guidelines for Environmental Marketing Claims, and How2Recycle was the first recycling labeling system in the US designed for consumers. The How2Recycle label is based on consistency, accuracy and transparency.
