Employee satisfaction, corporate culture, and financial performance

CURRENT STATE
The ESG team has qualitatively assessed the value of an inclusive culture in talent-driven organizations using Glassdoor data. Based on that, we have determined that positive cultural metrics could be a leading indicator of financial performance at the firm level, and can be a competitive advantage.

GOAL STATE
Increase the quality of our analysis by introducing quantitative measures and conducting back-testing. See a shift in investments towards companies that prioritize strong cultures, including talent management and diversity & inclusion programs.

DELIVERABLES
Assessment of 9 Glassdoor metrics, and recommendations on which has the strongest correlation to financial performance; for each metric, is absolute rating, rating relative to peers, or trend in rating most telling? Assessment of reliability of crowd-sourced data is as an indicator of culture; said another way, which company policies or benefits seem to lead to the highest employee satisfaction? Analysis of correlation between Glassdoor data (9 metrics) and financial performance for at least one industry, with a focus on the use case as leading indicator of performance, to reference with investors. Assessment of statistical significance to assess reliability and provides recommendations (whether or not to use the data) based on the sample size and timeliness of reviews Greater understanding of the link between employee satisfaction and stated company culture/policies. Comparison (using a handful of companies within each random sample) of employee satisfaction scores with qualitative assessment of culture (Aspirational). Set up an alert system based on Glassdoor ratings changes to notify ESG Research of a material change (up or down) that may indicate future performance

Presentation (slides and verbal presentation) to ESG Research Team and other investment professionals about the team‚ analytical findings on one or more industries Includes a deep-dive on a select number of companies from the random sample to connect findings from analysis with qualitative assessment of culture. Audience will include ESG Research, as well as select portfolio managers and fundamental analysts with an interest in incorporating an assessment of culture into analysis
