Farmed Oats Supply Chain Sustainability

CURRENT STATE
The food industry is experiencing a transformation not seen since the post WWII boom, which was the advent of Big Food and Big Ag. Both have been under assault as a new breed of consumer, coupled with emerging private brands, are disrupting traditional norms in the food system. Former Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack estimated the mere $6 million the USDA spent promoting organic agriculture had a more significant economic and social impact on rural America than any other farm subsidy program in force. So change is happening, but only in it's infancy .

GOAL STATE
At the very least we are driving sustainability through the following measurable activities:

  • Financial - Improving the economic viability of the grower rotation by reducing commodity market price risk and providing specialty premiums for higher value differentiated products.
    • This analysis should include the potential for introducing a high protein Chick Pea variety into grower rotations

  • Environmental — Reducing the carbon footprint of traditional oat ingredient supply chains originated in Montana’s Golden Triangle by improving processing efficiency and therefore freight efficiencies on a per pound of finished product basis

  • Social — providing our customers and ultimately consumers with a healthy and affordable product. We need to Identify and then quantify all sustainability aspects of our supply chain.

DELIVERABLES
An analysis (model) that quantify the sustainability of the oat supply chain:

  • A power point that communicates the sustainability story

  • A tool or tools that
    • track the impact over crop seasons
    • replicate the analysis on other supply chains
